 2010 Season Summary

Our season started with pre-season in early February, when all the boys from last years “A”s & “C”s. combined together to form one team. Due to the limited numbers in the U16’s, some of our boys volunteered to help out and make up the numbers. Unfortunately, we could not field a U16 Team and thus the U15’s started the season with a healthy number of 24 boys.

A combined pre-season with the U16’s, U15’s and the U14’s was a great concept as this gave the boys a opportunity to gel together and also have the added training from two coaches who I hold in high regards, Gary Monopoli & John Scicluna. Although the venue (Jells Park) was not the best environment, we adapted accordingly.

I had great pleasure in selecting our leadership group. Scott McInerney was appointed Captain along with our 3 Vice Captains, Luke Chin, Jordy Grimston and Jaya Sadikin. These boys set a fine example throughout the entire season and their leadership and dedication contributed in maintaining the team’s commitment and enthusiasm.

The parents were all supportive and generous with their support towards me, and of the team. I have no doubt that each parent was thrilled and excited with the way the team played this year. Alan Quinn did an outstanding job managing the team. The job of Team Manager should never be underestimated. The amount of time required behind the scenes is amazing.

As this was my first year as head coach, I felt I needed to be supported by a great team. The first choice was an easy one with Steve Gould (who had previously coached these boys), very keen to help out as our assistant coach/runner. On the next choice, I decided that the best support should come from our own back yard. It was very pleasing to have not one, but three senior players in Brett Kay, Shane Saunders and Richard Ranson join us in the coaching panel. I felt the mixture of youth and experience was invaluable and their dedication to the improvement to each of the boys was sensational.

I have always been a believer that you can only control what you can monitor and that is why statistical information is very important in the boy’s development. We started by monitoring the Inside 50’s, Tackles and the Scores. This was further enhanced with Kicks and Hit Outs. Gavin Foy and Robert Chin (a very excellent Knox man) provided all the statistical information needed. This was very useful during the game and as a reviewing tool to the boys before each training session. I have known Robert Chin for a few years now and he ceases to amaze me on his dedication to supporting the boys (whether its football or basketball) and again he stepped in and helped in the Team Management role when needed.

Others I should mention, who assisted throughout the year were our trainer’s, Sabine Watson and David Roberts, Scott Browne who ran the boundary, Harry Syrros -Umpires Escort, Peter Cameron - Interchange Steward. To all the parents, who assisted as Goal Umpires, Time Keepers and in the canteen as well as those cheering on the sidelines, a big thank you.  We really do have great support for this team and I am very grateful to everyone.

Lastly to the boys, what a great bunch of fine young men. What a pleasure it was to see a team whose primary focus was to enjoy playing football with their mates.

We are planning for an exciting, enjoyable and successful year for the boys next year, as it will be the boy’s final year in Junior Football.
